AIADMK Releases Second Candidate List for Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections
In a significant move ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, the AIADMK has unveiled its second list of 127 candidates, bringing the total number of nominees to 150. This announcement marks an aggressive step by the party as it positions itself as the principal opposition within the NDA alliance in the state.
The release follows the party’s initial announcement earlier this week, where a first list of 23 candidates was shared, featuring a blend of senior leaders and previous ministers vying for their traditional strongholds.
Key Constituencies and Candidates
The latest candidate list spans various constituencies across Tamil Nadu and includes a mix of seasoned politicians and fresh faces. Among the notable entrants is Leema Rose, contesting from Lalgudi. Being the wife of lottery tycoon Santiago Martin and the mother-in-law of Aadhav Arjuna adds a unique political dimension to her candidacy.
Another key figure is Mangulam K Mahendran, a deputy secretary from the advocate wing, contesting from Madurai East. The party has also nominated several ex-MLAs, including K Manickam from Sholavandan and P Saravanan from Madurai North, indicating a strategy that leans heavily on experienced leadership in critical regions.
Sitting MLA P Periya Pullan alias Selvam will seek re-election from Melur, reflecting the party’s approach to maintain continuity in select constituencies. Additional prominent names on the list include R Manoharan, a former whip from Srirangam, and P Kumar, a former Trichy MP contesting from Thiruverumbur.
DMK Accuses AIADMK of Internal Conflict
The ruling DMK wasted no time in responding to the AIADMK’s candidacy announcement, alleging that the list reveals entrenched infighting and factionalism within the opposition party. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai described the second list as exposing “groupism and an ongoing shadow war,” particularly between major leaders such as Edappadi K Palaniswami, SP Velumani, and P Thangamani.
According to Annadurai, some candidates who were seen as loyal to Velumani were overlooked in favor of those aligned with Palaniswami in constituencies like Singanallur and Kinathukadavu in the Coimbatore region. This, he claims, reflects the internal rifts affecting the party’s chances in upcoming elections.
Electoral Landscape Ahead of Elections
Earlier in its first candidate list, the AIADMK had renominated its party chief, Edappadi K Palaniswami, from his home constituency, alongside other senior leaders like D Jayakumar and C Vijayabaskar. The party has already finalized seat-sharing arrangements with NDA partners, allocating 65 out of 234 Assembly seats to allies, including the BJP and PMK.
With 150 candidates now declared, the AIADMK has effectively covered a significant portion of its quota and is anticipated to release additional names soon as it gears up to challenge the DMK-led alliance in the impending Assembly polls next month.
As the electoral race intensifies, all eyes are now focused on how these dynamics will shape the political landscape in Tamil Nadu and influence voter sentiments leading up to the elections.
